Call the main number; keep the extension for the right moment
If an office gives you a phone number and an extension, keep the two separate. Dial the main number and, when the connected switchboard requests the extension, use the in-call keypad according to its instructions. Do not append digits assuming AutoRedial will automatically send them later: this guide does not document that automation.
Our scenario is a voluntary call to a known switchboard. You need no real numbers to rehearse it: a note saying “verified main number” and “extension supplied by the office” is enough.
Prepare three details before calling
- Destination: verify the number through an official source or with the office. An extension alone does not replace the main phone number.
- Instruction: note whether you were told to wait for the menu before entering it. If the procedure is unknown, ask the office rather than inventing a sequence.
- Alternative: decide what to do if the extension does not answer: follow the menu, leave a message if offered, or end the call and try another time.
AutoRedial is a full dialer for Android 10 or later and must be configured as the default phone application. It provides an in-call keypad, mute, speakerphone and audio-device selection. Calling features depend on the device, SIM, carrier and capabilities exposed by Android.
Separate redial from an already connected menu
A redial session lets you configure answer waiting time, the interval, an attempt limit and retry conditions. Once Android reports a connected call, automatic retries stop and the conversation continues.
A recorded announcement may be that connection. AutoRedial follows Android Telecom state; it does not analyse the voice to decide whether a human or a menu answered. An extension still being unresolved does not turn a connected call into an unanswered attempt.
Walk through the example without promising an outcome
The office says: “Call our main number; enter the extension when you hear the menu.” You prepare both details and call. When the menu answers, listen to its instruction and use the in-call keypad. If the system rejects the extension, check the detail and follow your alternative. Increasing the redial attempt limit does not correct a wrong digit.
To stop a session that is still active, use its controls or persistent notification. Stopping redial is different from hanging up a connected conversation. Neither connection nor an answer from an office is guaranteed.
Leave a useful note for the next attempt
Call history supports private notes. You might write “switchboard connected; extension still needs confirmation” without copying unnecessary third-party information or recording a conversation that never happened.
